Main & Mill Brewing Made Two ‘Seinfeld’ Beers

As part of Main & Mill’s ‘Artist Series,’ the can art on these two brews is pretty darn awesome.

Before It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, before Arrested Development, before The Office — before the modern plethora of irreverent shows — there was Seinfeld.

The groundbreaking sitcom ended in 1998, but a couple of special release craft beers from Main & Mill Brewing Co. are a delicious reminder that its cultural influence lives on. The brewery is based in Festus, Missouri (a Festivus for the rest of us, anyone?) and doesn’t typically send its beers too far outside the region, but its two limited Seinfeld releases are definitely worthy of attention.

First up is Hello Newman, a robust porter inspired by muffin tops. Seinfeld fans may remember an episode titled “The Muffin Tops” (Season 8, Episode 21), where Elaine’s love of just the tops — not the “stumps” — of muffins inspires a guy to open up a bakery serving just that. Trouble naturally ensues when they run into various challenges trying to dispose of the unwanted stumps.

“It’s the best part. It’s crunchy, it’s explosive. It’s where the muffin breaks free of the pan and sort of does its own thing.” // NBC

To capture all that muffin top goodness in a porter, Main & Mill brewed Hello Newman Porter with an impressive lineup of blueberries, vanilla, toasted oats, and cinnamon. It actually tastes like a gooey muffin, if those baked goods came with an 8% ABV.

The other beer in the special release is Summer of George, a wheat ale named for another season 8 episode (“The Summer of George” Season 8, Episode 22). In the episode, George gets a hefty severance package from the Yankees, so he decides to take the summer off and devote it to doing whatever he wants. Long story short, he ends up having to learn to walk again.

This beer is more generally inspired by the episode and is meant to capture the flavors of summer. To make it, the brewers used additions of blood oranges, tangerine and vanilla. At only 4% ABV it’s ultra crisp and crushable, with the vanilla keeping the citrus more dreamsicle-smooth than zesty.

While the flavors are certainly fun references, the custom Seinfeld illustrations alone are enough to want these two beers:

The beers are part of the brewery’s ‘Artist Series,’ which showcases a different artist’s work with each release. In this case, the artist is Joe Bowen, a Pacific Northwest-based artist with a knack for pop culture-themed work (check out his Instagram for a ton of fun stuff).

For those in the St. Louis area (of which Festus is a suburb), it’s worth noting that Main & Mill just announced that their stock is running out fast. The official Seinfeld Facebook page recently re-posted the can art, so there’s a lot of hype around these beers at the moment. Serenity now!
