‘Emily in Paris’ and a Peeps-Flavored Beer You Are Either Going to Love or Hate

Just in time for Easter, this Peeps-flavored IPA is a ‘loathe’ or ‘love,’ much like the divisive Netflix show, ‘Emily in Paris.’

The Show: One very polarizing comedy-drama / 2020 / Darren Star Productions – Netflix

The Beer: NEIPA brewed with marshmallow cream / 10% ABV / Brix City Brewing – Little Ferry, NJ

Because the first thing you need to do in Paris in buy a beret. Nobody will know you’re from out of town… // Netflix

I’ll admit right upfront that I don’t care for Emily in Paris. And that’s kind of crazy because I really enjoy other TV shows created by Darren Star, like the ever-watchable Sex and the City and the surprisingly complex and full-of-heart Younger. But I just can’t get into Emily in Paris. Somewhere between Emily’s ridiculously unrealistic lifestyle (at least Carrie Bradshaw often noted how her shoe addiction made her wallet suffer) and her American tourist naïveté that is more grating than endearing, the show lost me completely.

That said, I know many people who love the show and praise its wistful escapism and culture-clash tropes. And while many critics have trashed the show for similar reasons to my own, others have raised up its backdrop and lead character to great acclaim. The show was even nominated for two Golden Globe awards (though it was later revealed that the show’s production company flew 30 of the voters to Paris for a mini vacation prior to that… hmm).

So, it’s only fitting to pair this show with a beer that will dazzle some palates and destroy others. I present to you Get Peep’d — a New England style Triple IPA inspired by (and flavored after) the candy Peeps. Hey, it’s Easter, after all.

The beer is far too sweet for me, which is interesting because I generally enjoy other sweet brews, and I positively adore a lot of Brix City’s creations, especially their NEIPAs. Get Peep’d is brewed with real marshmallow cream, which I tend to enjoy in a lot of Milkshake IPAs and Fruited Sours, but for whatever reason, the sugariness is just too overwhelming here. Much like Emily in Paris, this beer lost me pretty quickly. But it’s okay, Brix City. Just like I still enjoy Darren Star’s other shows, I’m still a huge fan of the rest of your work.

And while I can see that I’m not alone in my opinion, I’ve also spotted quite a few online reviews praising this saccharine sipper. One person even compared it to a Sunday morning mimosa with candy.

But hey, whatever floats your boat. If a can of Get Peep’d and a few episodes of Emily in Paris makes you happy, by all means go for it. I’ll just be over here enjoying my IPAs bitter and my TV comedy-dramas a touch more believable.
