‘Half Baked’ and one Magical Brownie Beer
Whether you celebrate 4/20 or not, this beer and movie pairing is nothing but a good time.
The Movie: Buddy stoner comedy with spots of magical realism / 1998 / Robert Simonds Productions – Universal Pictures
The Beer: Milk Stout / 7.3% ABV / WeldWerks Brewing Co. – Greeley, CO
Half Baked is one gleefully silly movie.
Starring Dave Chappelle, Harland Williams, Guillermo Diaz and Jim Breuer, it’s also at the pinnacle of ’90s stoner comedies. Written by Chappelle and his future Chappelle Show collaborator Neal Brennan, Half Baked follows the story of three friends trying to bail out their fourth friend from jail (after he accidentally fed a diabetic police horse) by selling a bunch of the electric lettuce.
Shenanigans ensue, complete with a horde of appearances from the likes of Tommy Chong, Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson, Tracy Morgan, John Stewart, Janeane Garofolo, Bob Saget and one really good Jerry Garcia impersonator! It’s the type of romp that seems predictable, but just when you think you have it all figured out, it whips out a new surprise. The plot progresses through a variety of subgenres: action, fantasy-sci fi, crime, heist adventure and like any good ’90s comedic flick, romance.
Rewatching it now 23 years later, Half Baked still manages to feel fresh. Plus any Chappelle starring role is always worth turning on and up.
WeldWerks’ Brownie Batter Stout also tastes fresh every time, and with its gooey-gooey “half baked” chocolatey dessert flavors, it makes for the perfect pairing with the Chappelle classic. There’s nothing “magic” hidden in this liquid brownie, but with the slew of pastry ingredients packed within, it doesn’t need any extra help.
The brewers made this sticky Stout with lactose, cocoa powder, cacao nibs, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, vanilla, and yes, real brownie mix! And did you see that WeldWerks is located in the Mile High state? Chappelle and his crew would approve…
While some may have something more ‘chronic’ in mind to pair with this flick, the beer’s kosher in every state. (if you can get it, that is. WeldWerks beers are often tough to find outside of Colorado, so there are some bonus brownie brews below).
